Spivak told New York Daily News, They said they wanted it somewhat dumbed down for women, with a lot more fluff in it, and more about the wife of the head Croatian terrorist, who is a former Miss Mexico." By Craig Nathanson People work to live, but most also live to work. A study on the meaning of work conducted back in 1987 revealed a strong attachment to work as a way of life. The study found that 86 percent of people would continue working even if they had enough money never to work another day. There could be no better indication that work is not simply a matter of putting food on the table, but is core to the being of most adults. Adults in mid-life in particular often find this sense of work as a central component of their lives under direct assault from a business culture that undervalues personal fulfillment as an essential driver of productivity. I believe the next wave of workforce management for enlightened corporations will be to focus on softer indicators of productivity. Fulfillment, meaning, satisfaction, and that intangible sense that the job is about more than a paycheck are what will make all workers, in particular those in mid-life, more productive. The alternative to paying attention to these issues is to suffer high levels of attrition among mid-life workers. Some corporations take the short-sighted view that experienced worker is a euphemism for highly compensated and therefore see little reason to make any effort to retain older employees. Enlightened organizations understand that this is a penny wise and pound foolish approach. Mid-career, mid-life employees are often among the most productive, skilled and dedicated in an organization. And as compensation plans tend to be more variable and results-oriented than in the past, it is less of a concern that more tenured employees earn more money just because they have been with the organization longer. As everyone knows, the cost of retaining an employee is considerably lower than the cost of hiring and training his or her replacement. Retention programs have tended to focus on tangible rewards. Bonuses, tuition assistance, flexible working hours, concierge services, even free gourmet coffee! What has not been central to retention strategies is the soul of the mid-life, mid-career employee. So what practical measures can corporate HR and line managers take to nourish the souls of their most important employees? Encourage employees to explore their inner needs. Many mid-life employees are essentially satisfied with their work. They are challenged, never bored, and believe they are putting their skills to good use. Yet they may not be sufficiently introspective to understand whether they are building the deep level of career and life satisfaction required for true contentment. The challenge here is that such employees are just one wake up call away from questioning everything in their lives. Consider balance, introspection, exploration of different desires and interests, many of which are not work-related, a kind of preventive medicine for the soul. Provide a safe environment to express personal needs. The fear of projecting weakness is a powerful undercurrent in corporate culture. Organizations that provide a safe environment to express fear and doubt and explore ways to address these concerns will defuse many potential retention challenges among employees who fear reprisal if they confide a desire to achieve more work-family balance, take off time to pursue a personal interest or take a new direction in their careers. Organizations need to make their employees feel comfortable to ask questions, confide doubts or concerns. More critically, organizations need to demonstrate they will treat these confidences appropriately and direct them toward a higher level of employee satisfaction, rather than use them as ammunition at the next performance review. Make renewal a job requirement. This may seem counter-intuitive. Force employees to take time off every so often to walk barefoot through the park. Or more substantively, strongly encourage them to pursue outside interests. Ask yourself if there is a member of your staff that sings in cabarets on the weekends. Was this information volunteered? Or did management find out by happenstance? Was managements reaction to reserve a table at the next performance or have a hallway meeting to question whether this employee valued lounge singing more than her job? Think of it this way. If the cabaret singer feels comfortable pursuing her avocation, she is less likely to regard work as a burden that keeps her from pursuing a personal passion. Encourage that pursuit, and it is much less likely the two activities will come into conflict. Taking an intangible like personal fulfillment and turning it into a job benefit is a significant challenge. It is much easier to give time, money or prizes. But the benefits of tangible rewards last only as long as the money, or the time, or the novelty of the prize. Encouraging the deeper personal satisfaction of key employees offers a bigger and longer lasting pay off. How bees make honey? Long time ago, people collected honey from the nests which wild bees make in tree holes. Later, people found that bees would bring their nectar to a wooden nest made by humans. This is called a hive. Bees suck up flower nectar with their long tube called proboscis. At their hive, they hold the nectar in their stomachs. This turns the nectar into a sticky liquid called honey. A special wax called beeswax come from the bodies of bees. Bees shape the beeswax into six-sided cells to form honeycomb. They then put the honey into the honeycomb. They also put beeswax lids on these honeycomb cells to stop the honey from coming out. Collecting Honey Most honey is made in big honey farms. People who keep bees for their honey are called beekeepers. They keep their hives near the flower fields. Bees mostly make honey in spring and summer when there are lots of flowers. They eat some of this honey and keep the rest in their nests for winter. Bees make much more honey than they need so beekeepers can take a lot of the honey for people to eat. Beekeepers collect honey in the spring. They wear special clothes to protect themselves from bee bites. They take the honeycombs out from the hives. Before they can get the honey, they have to scrape the beeswax lids off the honey comb. This is called uncapping. A special machine called an extractor takes the honey out of the honeycombs. The machine spins the honeycombs around very fast to make all the honey come out. The honey is then passed through a net with tiny holes to make it clean and clear. The honey drips through the holes and any small bits of beeswax are left in the net. Machines pour the liquid honey into jars. Lids are put on the jars to keep the honey fresh. Labels on the jars tell the people who are going to buy what kind of honey is in the jar. Every year, beekeepers sell millions and millions of jars of honey. Different Kinds of Honey There are hundreds of different kinds of honey in the world. The colour, taste, and smell of honey depend on the kind of flowers the bees visit. Every kind of flower has a different nice smell. When bees make honey from a type of flower, this nice smell becomes part of the honey. Liquid honey is cooled in a special way to make it thick and creamy. You can spread cream honey on bread or toast like butter. You can also use it as a topping for yoghurt or pudding. Honey is Good for You Honey is a carbohydrate. This means it is a kind of food that gives us energy to walk, run, think and play. Honey contains vitamins. Vitamins help to keep us healthy. Accomplished quilters know how all of the steps in the process are essential to the outcome of the quilt. Even preparing your quilt top is important and is not the time to take shortcuts. Here are some handy tips to make getting your quilt ready for quilting easier - without compromising on quality. Choosing the backing How much backing you will need depends on the size of your quilt. It is best if it is 4 larger all the way around than your quilt top. This will require the backing to be 8 wider in width and 8 longer in length than the size of your quilt top. If you are joining two pieces of fabric together for use as a backing, it is best that you make the join on the lengthwise grain. Sewing the material in this manner will produce the absolute best environment for the back of your quilt, ensuring fewer problems when pinning and machine quilting. Many quilters like to piece the backing for their quilt, using up left over fabric. It is important that you are aware that this can create problems for you when you attempt to machine quilt the quilt. The possibility of the fabric swimming and creating puckering is much higher when the backing has many joins, as they are not always on the straight grain. For easier and more successful quilting try to stick to just one join down the lengthwise grain. Once you have completed pinning your quilt, you do not want to have regrets about a decision made to save a few dollars one that could end up taking the fun out of quilting. Make wise choices to get the best results. Making the sandwich Now that you have your quilt top and your backing, you need to decide on the type of wadding you will use. Your wadding, like your backing should be 4 larger all the way around than your quilt top. This allows the use of tape or bulldog clips for anchoring the backing and batting down. On top of these layers, you will place your quilt top in preparation for pinning. It is wise to press your quilt top and backing before you attempt to assemble the quilt sandwich. Many times quilters take shortcuts, such as skipping pressing, which can have an undesirable affect on the outcome of the final product. Pinning the quilt top What is one of the most important tips for pinning a quilt top? Use only good quality stainless steel safety pins. Using cheap pins in your quilt can end up being a very expensive lesson. What if something happened and you had to postpone the quilting? If you have used inferior pins, you run the risk of rust ruining your quilt. The ideal size is approximately 1 long pin. As the pin needs to go through three layers, any smaller will be too hard to close. A larger gauge pin will leave too big of a hole. Remember to use the good quality pins found at your quilt shop. If you use cheap pins you risk having rust ruin your quilt. A great tool that makes pin basting your quilt layers easier, safer and faster is the KwikKlip. Using KwikKlip the safety pins close with ease, preventing broken nails, pricked fingers and sore fingertips. The time it takes to pin baste is reduced dramatically. Choosing marking tools There are some great choices when it comes to marking quilt designs there is no need to get in a sweat about it! The decision depends on what type of design you desire on your quilt. Some options are: freezer paper, quilt and tear paper, Clover blue washout marker, Clover Chaco liner, and Clover water soluble pencils. A quilting class is the ideal place to gain skills, learn in detail about the different alternatives and discover which you prefer. Templates are used by some quilters, but are not as popular a choice as the other options for marking. They can be clumsy and restricting to use. meal. Now TV commercials are touting the weight-loss
effects of milk and other dairy products. Can dairy
actually keep weight under control? How is that even
possible? Michael Zemel, PhD, director of the Nutrition Institute at
the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, has published
numerous papers on this subject. He outlines his latest
research in the January 2003 Journal of Nutrition, mouse
studies showing the role of calcium in weight gain and fat
storage. Too many people drop dairy from their diets when they try to
lose weight, he says. "They're shooting themselves in the
foot when they do that. Dairy products contain literally
hundreds of compounds that all have a positive effect on
human health and enhance the fat-burning machinery," he
explains. Milk The Why & How "When we cut dairy products, we send the body a signal, to
make more fat," says Zemel. "When your body is deprived of
calcium, it begins conserving calcium. That mechanism prompts
your body to produce higher levels of a hormone called
calcitriol, and that triggers an increased production of fat
cells." High levels of calcitriol "tell" fat cells to store
themselves in the body, he says. This increase in calcitriol
also "tells" fat cells to expand, he says. "So you're
getting bigger, fatter fat cells. And a lot of big, fat
cells makes for a big, fat person." Extra calcium in your diet suppresses this hormone, he says.
Your body breaks down more fat, and fat cells become leaner,
trimmer. A high-dairy diet can boost weight loss by about
70%. But wait, there's more. "It turns out that milk, cheese, and
yogurt are much more effective than calcium supplements or
calcium-fortified foods," Zemel says. Why? Dairy products
are a complex collection of compounds. Like phytochemicals
found in fruits and vegetables, there's more than vitamins
and minerals in dairy products. "They are not classically
nutrients, but are recognized as having beneficial effects." Fat Calories Still Count, But Calcium Will Change Your Body
Composition Dairy isn't a weight-loss miracle, says Zemel. Calories
still count. But even if you don't restrict calories, taking
in more calcium will change your body composition. You're
shifting calories from fat to lean body mass. "On the
scales, you may not see a change. But we've seen a loss of
body fat," he says. "We need to think of milk as more than a calcium-delivery
vehicle," he says. "It's more than just calcium. It's
high-quality protein, a collection of amino acids that
provides positive effects on skeleton, muscle, and fat." Zemel's research holds water, says Lara Hassan, MS, a
nutritionist with the Cooper Clinic in Dallas. Indeed,

and low in fat and calories. "If you have soup before a
meal, it helps control hunger and you eat less," Rolls says.
"Low-calorie soup takes the edge off your hunger." Just be
careful not to eat rich, cream-based soups, they could add
calories to your diet, she says. When You Add Water Rich Foods, You Add Volume But Few
Calories How it works: Water dilutes the calories in food. You can
then eat more for the same calories. When you add
water-rich blueberries to your breakfast cereal, or
water-rich eggplant to your lasagna, you add food volume
but few calories, Rolls explains. Grapes have more water content than raisins. For a
100-calorie snack, you can eat more grapes than raisins.
It's just that simple. Fat Has Less Water Than Any Food Fat has less water than any food element at 9 calories per
gram, alcohol is next at 7, followed by protein and
carbohydrates each at 4, Rolls says. Want More Examples? Consider the difference between chocolate milk and a milk
chocolate bar. A 1 1/2 ounce milk chocolate bar has 230

with whole milk has 250 calories. For about the same
calories, you get a portion that is five times bigger
than the chocolate bar. Add more vegetables, and less pasta and fat, to a pasta
dish, and you get more food volume. You see the difference,
and feel satisfied when you eat it, she says. Obese people eat more low-water foods than normal-weight
people, big portions of meats, full-fat milk and cheese,
fried eggs, high-fat desserts, one study shows. They also
ate few high-water foods like salads, fruits, skim milk. Psychological satisfaction is powerful, she says. "We're
talking about dietary changes that people can sustain. If
fat content is too low, it doesn't satisfy your hunger. If
you don't enjoy foods, you are not in the long run going to
sustain the eating pattern. That's where people go wrong,
they go too extreme, so they're on the same old dieting
roller coaster." Make The Weight Loss Switch Rolls' theories are right on
the money, says Hassan. "There's a lot of research to back
this up. Foods with high water content take longer to eat,
and they generally leave people feeling fuller. People feel
better when their plate is full and their stomach is full." Her advice: Drink two glasses of water or other non-calorie beverage
before a meal. At a restaurant, either eat a small salad or broth-based
soup. At home, fill up half the plate with vegetables, one-fourth
with a starch, and one-fourth with protein -- so the
dominant part is vegetables. If you want seconds, veggies
would be the choice. Before going to a restaurant, eat a high-volume, low-calorie
snack, fat-free milk, a piece of fruit, a cup of light
yogurt. "You won't be famished, so you won't eat a whole
basket of chips or bread." If you get the evening munchies, drink bouillon, hot tea,
or light cocoa, or have two cups strawberries with light
cool whip. "It's a great dessert and only 100 calories,"
Hassan says. Tea is calorie-free, has less caffeine than coffee, and
is a great source of antioxidants. However, tea won't
do much to help weight loss, Hassan tells WebMD. "Sip
tea to get full, but I would never tell someone it would
boost metabolism." The bottom line for weight loss, follow a reduced-calorie,
healthy eating plan, get regular exercise, and do weight
training to increase lean body mass and speed up metabolism,
